GOG.com Shuts Down

It's a sad day for legacy PC Gaming. GOG.com, the premiere (and really only) source for buying games of yesteryear has shut down. There isn't really a reason given as to why they had to shut down, but chatter on Twitter suggests it has to do with difficulty getting publishers to sign on to something that is DRM free.

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team

That's too bad.

I hope Valve hires them to make old games on Steam behave more nicely.

From rumors and various sources it seems to be a really bad PR stunt.

the theories are :

* GOG is actually shutting down (which is impossible, considering the last CDProjekt orange game series campaign in Poland, it was very similar and a lot of people were pissed because of it)
* GOG is out of beta state and is adding more games
* GOG is releasing their own game client
* and finally the most controversial, GOG is being taken over by Valve Software – a lot of big Polish websites (gram.pl, gamezilla.pl and others) claim that their unofficial sources inform of possibility of Steam taking over GOG

I'd be surprised to see it get a client, unless that client is optional. One of the selling points of GOG that they kept going on about was that you didn't need a client.

I'd be even more surprised to see Steam pick up GOG. It just doesn't seem to fit with either company's strategy.

They posted an update, the movie in the link shows a game they didn't have before "Baldurs Gate Complete Edition"

Guess it's just a publicity stunt after-all. Pretty lame though.
