Steam launched their new UI yesterday, and although it was in beta for quite some time and many people have been using it, now everyone gets the joy of using their brand spanking new interface. There are a lot of new features with this new UI so I thought I'd outline the less obvious ones.

Favorites & Categories

The new UI introduces categories, which makes having favorites largely irrelevant. No longer are you limited to having only two lists for your games, you can organize them however you like. Simply right click on a game's entry and select Choose category. If you do use favorites, the game will show up in that list rather than the category you selected. However, should you ever remove it from Favorites it will revert back to the category assigned.

Jump Lists

Although it was introduced prior to the beta, Jump Lists play a larger role in the category. By default, the Windows 7 Jump List will show your most recent games, but you can also pins games here, yet again making Favorites irrelevant.

If you're not using Windows 7, Steam also has a jump list integrated into the Status Icon in the lower right. Just click on it and your 5 most recently played games will show up.

Game Specific Overlay

You can now disable or enable the Steam overlay on a per game basis. Just right click on the game and choose properties.

Custom Friend Notifications

You can also do something similar with your friends list, setting custom notification settings for specific friends.

Tiny Icons and Mini Games List

They're not gone, just harder to find. To enable the Mini Games list select View -> Small Mode

By default the tiny icons are enabled in Small Mode. If you want them enabled in Detailed view or List view for the big client, there is a small + at the top of the Scroll bar on the left, you can select that to enable tiny icons.

In List view you can switch to icons by right clicking the blank space above where the big ass icons are:

Just Type!

If you're in the any of the large mode game lists, just start typing the name of the game and that game will be selected. It's like Spotlight on the Mac, or whatever did instant searching first.

Wishlists!

A new feature of the Steam store page, and by no means exclusive to the UI is the ability to have wishlists tied to your account. These are viewable based on your Steam Community privacy preferences, so you never know who might get you what your digital heart truly desires.
